Sports are a great way for your child to be active and develop athletic skills. Once your kid reaches age 6 or 7, he or she is likely to have the physical and mental capacity to play organized sports. Fall will be here before you know it, and the changing seasons are a good time to begin a sport or make a change to something new. Here are a few tips for how to choose a fall sport for your child to try.

Is Your Child Ready for a Fall Sport?

Fall is the perfect time to encourage your child to try a fall sport, something he or she hasn’t tried before. Choose a fall sport for your child based on age. Children who are between the ages of 6 and 9 typically have basic motor skills, but they may not have many complex ones. Younger kids are new to teamwork. Also, they may not follow directions well. Soccer is a great fall sport for younger kids. It’s active and helps your child build his or her hand-eye coordination. Soccer is a social sport since players must work together to make goals. This will help them learn how to cooperate with others and follow directions.

Does Your Child Show an Interest in a Fall Sport?

Notice whether your child is naturally interested in a fall sport. Does he or she watch one on television like baseball or basketball? When you take your child to a game, does he or she ask questions? Kids are more likely to stick with a fall sport that they find interesting. Consider your kid’s temperament. Some children have the right personality for team sports while others are more geared toward individual ones, such as golf, the type where they only have to rely on themselves to succeed or fail.

What Can You Afford?

Choosing a fall sport for your child to try includes considering the cost. Can your family afford the cost of uniforms, fees and maybe even travel if your child winds up on a team that travels from place to place to compete.
